Austrian-born stage and film actor, born in 1892. A powerhouse of German Expressionist theater and cinema, he was known for intense, neurotic performances. He played the murderer Nera in Robert Wiene's The Hands of Orlac (1924) and appeared in Fritz Lang's The Woman on the Moon (1929). Fleeing the Nazis in 1933, he worked in Hollywood and later returned to the German stage as a celebrated director. He died in 1970.
