American actor, born Ernest Bickel in 1897. One of the most respected leading men of the 1930s and 1940s, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor twice, for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). He plays Tony Cavendish, the John Barrymore-like brother, in The Royal Family of Broadway (1930), the first film to put his name above the title. His other films include Death Takes a Holiday (1934) and A Star Is Born (1937). He died in 1975.
