American dancer, actor, and singer. Born in 1899, Astaire is widely regarded as the greatest popular-music dancer in film history. He is best known for his partnership with Ginger Rogers in a series of 1930s musicals, and for his later films such as Royal Wedding (1951) and The Band Wagon (1953). His choreography, filmed in long takes with the dancer's whole body in frame, set the standard for how dance is shot on film. He died in 1987.
