He won the first Academy Award for Best Director, for 7th Heaven (1927), and was known for romantic, sentimental films that took feeling seriously at a time when realism was in fashion. He directed Street Angel (1928) and made a long string of films at Fox and MGM through the 1930s. His films often center on love as a force that survives poverty, war, and death.
