Ethel Waters

American singer and actress, born in 1896. A pioneering African American performer who began in vaudeville and became a Broadway and film star. She appeared in Bubbling Over (1934), Cabin in the Sky (1943), and Pinky (1949), for which she received an Oscar nomination. She died in 1977.
