Scottish-born character actor whose imposing frame and booming voice made him a memorable figure of silent film. Born in 1878, he trained as a concert pianist before turning to the stage and then Hollywood. He often played villains or larger-than-life figures, including Clopin, king of the beggars, in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923). He moved into sound films before his death in 1933.
