American actor, writer, and director, born in 1896. He began as a stage actor and appeared in early sound films, including The Unholy Three (1930) as Hector, the shop worker loved by Rosie. He moved behind the camera and directed a string of comedies in the 1930s and 1940s, including The Cat and the Canary (1934) and My Favorite Blonde (1942). He died in 1980.
