American actress, born 1898 in Philadelphia. Discovered through a Goldwyn talent search, she became a leading lady of the mid-1920s and starred in Souls for Sale (1923) and King Vidor's The Crowd (1928), one of the defining films of the silent era. She was married to Vidor from 1926 to 1935. She retired from the screen in the mid-1930s and lived in relative privacy for the rest of her long life. She died in 1991.
