American film director, screenwriter, and actor (1891-1961) best known for co-directing many of Buster Keaton's greatest short comedies, including Convict 13 (1920), Cops (1922), and Day Dreams (1922). He also directed W.C. Fields in The Bank Dick (1940) and My Little Chickadee (1940, co-directed with Fields). Cline began his career as a Keystone cop and appeared in many early Sennett comedies before transitioning to directing.
