British-born American film director and screenwriter, born in 1891. He moved from the London stage to Hollywood and became a versatile MGM director across genres, directing Greta Garbo and John Gilbert in Love (1927), Grand Hotel (1932), Dark Victory (1939), and The Razor's Edge (1946). He was known for elegant melodrama and for handling large ensemble casts. He died in 1959.
