American filmmaker known for his low-budget science fiction and horror films. He directed Jail Bait (1954), Bride of the Monster (1955), Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), and Night of the Ghouls (1959). His films were made on tiny budgets with borrowed equipment and a cast of friends. He was not widely known during his lifetime. He died in 1978, and Tim Burton's 1994 biopic Ed Wood made him famous as the worst director of all time, a label that is unfair but has stuck.
