Soviet filmmaker and theorist, born David Kaufman in 1896. A pioneer of documentary cinema, he developed the "Kino-Eye" theory that the camera could see more truthfully than the human eye. His masterpiece Man with a Movie Camera (1929) is a landmark of both documentary and experimental film.
