American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader, born in 1899. One of the most important figures in jazz history, he led his orchestra from 1923 until his death. Black and Tan (1929) was his first film appearance. His other film work includes Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and Paris Blues (1961). He died in 1974.
