Canadian-born American film director, born 1894 in Grimsby, Ontario. A mainstay of Mack Sennett's studio, he directed scores of two-reel comedies in the 1920s, including The Daredevil (1923), and was known for engineering the destructive, fast-paced gags the Keystone style was built on. In the sound era he became one of the key directors at Columbia, helming many of the Three Stooges shorts. He died in 1970.
