American film director known for his long collaboration with Greta Garbo and his sensitive handling of stars. Born in 1895, he trained as an engineer before joining the movies as an assistant to Maurice Tourneur. He directed Rudolph Valentino in The Eagle (1925) and went on to direct Garbo in Flesh and the Devil, Anna Karenina, and other hits. He earned six Best Director nominations and directed The Yearling (1946).
