American actor, born in 1901. A Broadway performer who became a film lead in the early sound era, he starred in The Big House (1930) as the prison lifer Morgan and was nominated for an Academy Award. He spent much of his later career in the Boston Blackie detective series at Columbia. He died in 1970.
