Charles Vanel

French actor and director, born 1892 in Rennes. With a career spanning more than 200 films across six decades, he was one of the most durable character actors of French cinema. He played the scheming Corradin in The House of Mystery (1923) and remained a screen presence through the sound era, notably in Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear (1953) and Diabolique (1955). He died in 1989.
