American actor, born in 1874. He appeared in The Black Raven (1943) as the Sheriff. Best known for his role as the Emperor Ming the Merciless in the Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s, he was a prolific character actor who specialized in villains and authority figures. He appeared in over 200 films throughout his career. He died in 1949.
