English-American actor who became one of Hollywood's most enduring stars. Born Archibald Leach in Bristol in 1904, he moved to America with a stage troupe and stayed. He made over 70 films, including His Girl Friday (1940), North by Northwest (1959), and Charade (1963). Known for his comic timing, his tailored suits, and his ability to play both drama and comedy. He retired from acting in 1966 and died in 1986.
