German-American film producer, born in 1867. The founder of Universal Pictures and one of the pioneers of the American film industry. He produced hundreds of films from the 1910s through the 1930s, including Drifting (1923) and the original Universal horror cycle. He was known for giving opportunities to European immigrant filmmakers and for his aggressive, independent approach to the studio system. He died in 1939.
