American film and television director, screenwriter, and producer, born in 1922. He began as a screenwriter of Westerns for Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher, writing the acclaimed Ranown cycle films including *Seven Men from Now* (1956) and *The Tall T* (1957). He turned to directing in the 1960s, helming Westerns like *The Rounders* (1965) with Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda, and later worked extensively in television. He died in 2001.
