American actor and dancer (1908-2003) best known for his role as Jed Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies (1962-1971). He began his career as a dancer in Hollywood musicals, originally cast as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz (1939) but forced to withdraw due to an allergic reaction to the aluminum makeup. He later starred as the title character in the detective series Barnaby Jones (1973-1980).
