Brigitte Helm

German actress. Born in 1906, she made her film debut as Maria and her robot double in Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927), a role that defined her career. She appeared in a number of German films through the 1920s and early 1930s, often in dual roles or as mysterious, otherworldly figures. She retired from acting in 1935 and lived the rest of her life out of the public eye. She died in 1996.
