English actor best known for playing Frankenstein's monster in the 1931 Universal film and its sequels. Born William Henry Pratt in 1887, he became one of the icons of horror cinema, starring in The Mummy (1932), The Black Cat (1934), and The Terror (1963). His gentle offscreen manner contrasted with his macabre roles. He died in 1969.
