Bessie Smith

American blues singer, born in 1894. Known as the "Empress of the Blues," she was the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. St. Louis Blues (1929) is her only known film appearance, a two-reel short directed by Dudley Murphy. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. She died in 1937.
