South African-born British actor whose portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in fourteen films (1939-1946) and many radio broadcasts became the definitive screen Holmes for a generation. He was also a celebrated swashbuckler, playing Sir Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) opposite Errol Flynn. Born 1892, died 1967.
