American actress, the first Chinese-American film star and a striking presence in silent and sound cinema. Born Wong Liu Tsong in 1905 in Los Angeles, she began as an extra as a teenager and rose to international fame in The Thief of Bagdad (1924) and Piccadilly (1929). Limited by the racist casting of her era, she moved between Hollywood and Europe and fought for meaningful roles throughout her career. She was the first Asian American to lead a U.S. television series, The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong (1951).
