Russian-born American actress, producer, and screenwriter, born 1879 in Yalta, Crimea. A towering stage star who came to the United States with a Russian repertory company, she became one of the highest-paid and most independent women in early Hollywood, running her own production unit at Metro. She produced and starred in Salomé (1923), an art-deco adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play, and her salon was a center of early Los Angeles queer life. Her film career faded in the late 1920s, though she returned to the screen in character parts in the 1940s. She died in 1945.
