Russian-born French film director, actor, and screenwriter, born 1885 in Moscow. He began acting in pre-revolutionary Russian cinema and followed the producer Joseph Ermolieff to Paris, where he became a key director at Films Albatros. His ten-chapter serial The House of Mystery (1923), co-written with and starring Ivan Mosjoukine, was a major success and helped establish the Russian émigré studio in France. He continued directing through the 1920s and into the sound era. He died in 1942.
