Ukrainian film director, born in 1894. One of the major figures of Soviet cinema, he brought a lyrical, poetic sensibility to films about the upheavals of his time. His "Ukraine Trilogy" - Zvenigora (1928), Arsenal (1929), and Earth (1930) - is his best-known work. Earth, a silent film about collectivization, is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. He later worked under the constraints of Stalinist censorship and taught a generation of Ukrainian filmmakers. He died in 1956.
