American film director, writer, and actor (1951-) known for his gritty, transgressive films exploring sin, redemption, and urban decay. He made his feature debut with The Driller Killer (1979), in which he also starred as the murderous artist Reno Miller (credited as Jimmy Laine). He went on to direct Ms. 45 (1981), King of New York (1990), Bad Lieutenant (1992), and The Funeral (1996), establishing himself as one of American independent cinema's most distinctive voices.
