American film studio founded in 1907 by George K. Spoor and Gilbert M. Anderson ("Broncho Billy"). Essanay (from "S and A") produced many early silent films, including Charlie Chaplin's Essanay comedies of 1915-1916, such as The Tramp, The Bank, and A Woman. The studio was based in Chicago with a second studio in Niles, California. Chaplin left Essanay in 1916 for Mutual Film Corporation, and the studio ceased production around 1918.
