American film production company operated by Thomas Edison's Edison Manufacturing Company (later Thomas A. Edison, Inc.) from 1894 to 1918. Edison Studios produced many of the earliest narrative films in the United States, including Frankenstein (1910), the first screen adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel. The studio was based in the Bronx, New York, and was a dominant force in early American cinema until the rise of Hollywood.
